The Ritual & History
Saunagus takes its name from the German Aufguss — meaning "infusion" — but it is in Denmark where this practice truly found its identity. Rooted in thousands of years of Scandinavian bathing culture — a tradition of cleansing, healing, and gathering — the Danish approach evolved into something more ceremonial and intimate: a certified practitioner pours carefully chosen essential oils over glowing stones, then moves rhythmically through the air with a towel, circulating waves of heat around every person in the room. Shaped around breathwork, aroma, and the relationship between heat and the nervous system, it is meditative, communal, and deeply grounding. Today the practice has spread across Europe, but the Danish tradition remains distinct in its emphasis on intention and the human connection within the ritual.
The Science
Sauna exposure produces effects comparable to moderate aerobic exercise: boosted circulation, lowered blood pressure, and meaningful support for the autonomic nervous system. When essential oils are introduced, inhaled aromas act directly on the respiratory tract and the limbic system, opening the airways and shifting the body toward calm. The cold contrast that follows accelerates recovery and leaves the nervous system fully reset. This is not passive relaxation — it is an active, evidence-informed practice.
At Ladata
Every Wednesday at 1 PM, Katrine — a certified Saunagus practitioner trained in Denmark — guides you through the full ritual: essential oils chosen for therapeutic benefit, breathwork woven into each heat phase, cold plunge contrast, and a grounded opening and close. You leave with clearer airways, a quieter mind, and a body that has genuinely reset.
